After a year and a half of relentless gigging with no recorded music to their name, Bristol’s indie rockers IOTA have finally released their debut single ‘My Enemy’. This strident critique of life in a society ‘brainwashed’ by the media neatly captures the spirit of the band, preserving the polished-yet-raw spark the group radiates in live shows.

If you’re one for watching indie films, sipping white wine whilst munching on fish finger sandwiches, and having profound conversations about Tolstoy with strangers on a night out, chances are you’ll like Some Bodies. An artsy blend of indie, surf, pop and old school rock, the band’s sound is enigmatic and a little bit weird, far from being a clear-cut member of any one genre.

Self-assured, yet down-to-earth, George Edwards, a.k.a. IdleGod, is quite a character. I reviewed IdleGod’s headline show at The Fleece a few months ago and was rather impressed with Edwards’s songwriting and performance, so, naturally, he was put at the top of the interview hit list. Although Twisted State Of Mind were only playing a short set supporting Solcura at The Fleece on Tuesday, with their super energetic and even a bit theatrical show, they earned themselves the right to be labelled as “the real headliners” of the night by Solcura. They may have been up in front of a small crowd in a venue far from their hometown of Witney, but that didn’t stop the band from playing with energy levels befitting a packed-out show at a bigger venue, or a festival stage.

With a name like Krooked Tongue, it wouldn’t be wrong to assume this is a band whose music is full of pent-up angst. If I had to pick one word to describe the trio’s ten-song set at The Louisiana last Thursday that would be ‘downright moody’. Well, that’s two words, but you get the gist. […]

A term coined by Rival Karma, ninja rock comes across as a blend of blues-infused stoner rock and southern rock. Rival Karma’s set was crammed with killer riffs, wildly dynamic drumming and vocals combining just the right amount of grit and smoothness.

Bristol’s fuzzy riff rock quartet Kings Kin drew in a hefty crowd at Café Kino for their slot supporting Burnout on 9th March. After being seriously impressed by the band’s intoxicating raw power and quality music, I grabbed the opportunity to have an informal chat in the café upstairs to find out more about the newcomers.

Rowdy, laddish, and full of music oozing indie hit potential, The DLX’s headline gig at The Louisiana on Friday night was a success from start to finish. Throughout the band’s whole set, singer / rhythm guitarist Sam Trusson was pinging back and forth in and out of the audience, clambering over the drum kit, and leaping off amps.

IOTA is undoubtedly one of Bristol’s best up-and-coming bands right now, bringing high-energy sets to every stage they play, not only in Bristol, but all around the country. Their music is refreshing and appealing to those seeking something new, whilst still tipping its hat to some of rock n’ roll history’s finest moments.
